STEPHEN MAGUIRE tops the table overnight after the first day of the Winners’ Group of the Championship League.

Maguire claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over defending champion Martin Gould in the last match of the day to end it on three points.

Gould was poised to win 3-1 when Maguire was left needing a snooker in the fourth frame but the Scot got it and then won the decider to move into pole position.

Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump, Ricky Walden and Ryan Day each have two points. Martin Gould ends the first day with one point while Joe Perry, who won the inaugural Championship League in 2008, lost all four of his matches.

The winner on Thursday night will receive a cheque for £10,000 plus an invite to the prestigious Champion of Champions event next season.
